The haziness is due to posterior capsule opacification (PCO). It happens when the thin membrane (capsule) that surrounds the intraocular lens becomes cloudy in its back surface. This thin membrane used to house the original cataract, but now holds the intraocular lens in place.
Clouding of its back surface is very common and can occur in up to 20–30% of patients after routine cataract surgery. It is a natural process and is not a sign that your original surgery was unsuccessful.
A YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick and painless laser procedure that clears this opacity and restores vision. It is performed in rooms, and takes only a few minutes to complete, with return to usual activities the same day.
