Macular Degeneration

Treatment for macular degeneration

Age related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a common disease affecting the central retina – the macula which is responsible for sharp, detailed vision. ARMD is one of the leading causes of vision loss in older Australians, affecting 1 in 7 people over the age of 50.

What are the types of ARMD?

There are two main types:

  • Dry (atrophic) ARMD

This is the more common form and involves the gradual thinning of the macula and the accumulation of deposits called drusen. The vision loss is usually slow and progressive over a number of years.

  • Wet (neovascular) ARMD

This is less common but causes rapid vision loss. It involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels under the macula which leak fluid or blood.

What are the symptoms of ARMD?

Symptoms of ARMD include blurred vision, wavy or distorted lines, difficulty reading (lines and words look warped and run into each other), inability to recognise faces and dark/empty areas in the centre of vision.

  Check your macular health

As you age, it is increasingly important to check your vision regularly and to contact your optometrist or ophthalmologist should you notice any changes. The grid below is an Amsler chart for monitoring of ARMD. Wearing your usual reading glasses, the grid is held at a distance where you normally hold a book. Close one eye and focus on the black dot in the centre of the grid and look for:

  • Wavy or bent lines
  • Dark or blurred patches
  • Empty spaces

Then repeat this with your other eye.

How is ARMD treated?

There is currently no cure for ARMD. However, lifestyle changes such as a mediterranean diet rich in green leafy vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids, as well as an AREDS2 antioxidant supplementation can help slow the progression of Dry ARMD. Additionally, intravitreal injections targeting the complement pathway of the immune system are becoming available for slowing geographic atrophy (an advanced form of dry ARMD).

Wet AMD can be effectively managed with anti-VEGF intravitreal injections which reduce abnormal blood vessel growth and preserve or even improve vision. You can read more about intravitreal injections by clicking the link below.
