Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal Injections - Northern Beaches

Intravitreal injection is a common and highly effective treatment used to deliver medication directly into the vitreous gel, to reach the retina directly where it is needed.

It is the standard of care for management of a range of retinal conditions including:

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic macular oedema
  • Retinal vein occlusion

Intravitreal drug delivery allows effective absorption of accumulated blood and fluid from the retina and render the disease inactive. The latest generation of these drugs do so in a long-lasting manner, so patients require fewer injections. In most cases, vision is stabilised and, in many cases, meaningful vision improvement can be achieved.

Intravitreal injection is a short in-rooms procedure, performed under local anaesthesia, with a return to normal activities the same day.
