Recurrent Corneal Erosion Syndrome

Occurs when the epithelial cells of the cornea are damaged, exposing the underlying sensitive corneal nerves. There is often a history of previous corneal injury or dry eye.

Symptoms include recurrent attacks of acute ocular pain, sensitivity to light and watery eyes either when awakening or during sleep. Simple treatments include frequent use of lubricating eye drops and ointments, using an air humidifier, wearing protective glasses, and keeping well hydrated. More severe cases may require additional measures such as a bandage contact lens, corneal debridement, or corticosteroid eye drops.

If the above measures fail, and reoccurrence is frequent, a laser treatment called phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) is offered, whereby the damaged epithelium cells are removed to encourage regrowth of new healthier cells.
